NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WFSB) -

Local lawmakers called for a federal ban on flavored e-cigarettes Thursday.

Senator Richard Blumenthal and Congresswoman Elizabeth Esty called for the ban after a study was released by Yale University this week.

The study showed 41.8% of young e-cigarette users were attracted to the flavors.

The study found that 80% of young people who vaped to help them quit smoking were still using cigarettes months later.

A 2014 study from Yale showed that more than 25% of Connecticut teenagers had tried e-cigarettes.

The Food and Drug Administration recently implemented regulations with added oversight of the tobacco industry to prevent retailers from making false health claims.

Lawmakers said E-cigarette manufacturers use marketing tactics aimed at teenagers.

Blumenthal and Esty are currently leading the Protecting Children from Electronic Cigarette Advertising Act.
