BROOKLYN, CT (WFSB) -

Everyone is talking about what’s cooking at the Brooklyn Fair this year.

The gates are open to the fair, which is one of the oldest agricultural fairs in the nation.

"It's a good place for everybody to come together. Lot of friends and families come here,” said Bedford Lawrence, who is a lifelong fair-goer.

This 137th edition is a special one, where one family each day will get free entry, rides and food.

"They can ride the entire day they are here for free! Our vendors have been great they have been so generous and we're giving them a coupon book,” said volunteer Lori Malstrom.

The free coupons are for all kinds of fair food, like French fries, sausage, and western beef barbecue sandwiches, sliced right from slow-cooked pieces of beef.

Maverick Butts, Barbecue Master, said people line up for those sandwiches.

There’s also livestock in the barn at the fair, and farm families spend weeks preparing.

"I started when I was in kindergarten showing cows. My father did it as a child. All summer long we work and practice with the calves, feed the calves, wash the calves...it’s a culmination of the last thing before we have to go back to school,” said Courtney Tanner-Bellows, of Creamery Brook Farm.

The fair runs through Sunday.
