Puppy lovers can give their companions an extra scratch behind the ears on Friday.

It's National Dog Day, according to NationalDayCalendar.com.

The site said the day encourages dog ownership of all breeds, mixed and pure, and embraces the opportunity for all dogs to live a happy, safe and abuse-free life.

Advocates said it's their goal every National Dog Day to find homes for as many dogs as they can. The goal for the National Dog Day Foundation itself is to rescue 10,000 dogs each year.

The day was founded in 2004, according to the site. It was the brainchild of pet lifestyle expert Colleen Paige.
