SOUTHINGTON, CT (WFSB) -

A birthday only comes once a year, and when it’s a child’s birthday, parents want to make their day extra special.

A Southington mom is trying to do just that for her son, who has autism, but she needs help from the public.

Joey Masella, who is 5 years old, communicates by pointing to pictures or using an iPad.

“Knowing exactly what he needs or wants. That's probably the most difficult part when they're nonverbal,” Karen Masella-Chartier said.

Joey doesn’t speak, and was diagnosed with autism when he was 2 years old.

“He was pointing and gesturing and making sounds and little by little he just kind of disappeared before our eyes,” Masella-Chartier said.

Joey’s birthday is just two weeks away, and his mom is trying to make it one he will remember.

“It's difficult to make friends and communicate and I'm always watching him on the playground and he's either by himself or with his teacher. It breaks my heart,” Masella-Chartier said.

Every year, Joey loves getting birthday cards.

“Looking at different pictures and opening up the mail and touching the different, like the glitter, different texture on the cards he really enjoys,” Masella-Chartier said.

She’s hoping the public can help by sending Joey birthday cards through the mail.

“Let him know that there is a lot of people out there who care about him, just like we do,” Masella-Chartier said.

You can send him a birthday card to Joey Masella, 433 Spring St., Southington, CT, 06489.
