A special delivery is headed to Louisiana for the children impacted by the devastating floods.
New Britain couple Steven and Sheri Amato are making the trip down this week...with a truckload of toys. They have collected stacks of toys for the children in Louisiana, as their families are now rebuilding their lives.
"Toys is what I know, and I thought gee, all those kids lost all their toys, and I’ll bet that's not at the top of anybody's priority list, understandably,” said Steven Amato, co-owner of Amato’s Toy and Hobby in New Britain.
Earlier this month, heavy rains submerged some areas of the state in two-feet of water.
Thousands of people were rescued...many families forced into shelters.
Amato said the images of the devastation compelled him to do something.
"I just can't imagine having your house float down the river or be totally destroyed. I just can't imagine how that person's got to feel,” Amato said.
So far, they've collected $1,500...stretching it as much as possible to buy new toys.
“For a $20 donation, I can get about $100 to $150 worth of toys. I can't do that with food or clothes,” Amato said.
From model kits to crafts to games, the Amatos hope they will bring some measure of joy to the children who lost their treasured toys.
"We’re trying to mostly stay with things that are small. We figured that some of these kids, a lot of these people might be in temporary housing, motels, whatever, so we're not doing a lot of big, bulky things,” Amato said.
The Amatos are hitting the road on Thursday morning, so if you’re interested in donating toys or funds, you can call 860-229-9069 or stop by 283 Main St. in New Britain.
