Groton police are notifying residents about a telephone scam that is targeting the area, especially businesses.
Police said a male caller using a phone number with a Virginia area code has been contacting businesses and individual residents.
The suspect identifies himself as a project coordinator for the Shennecossett Golf Course, police said, and gives a sales pitch for sponsorship opportunities.
Police said he has no association with the golf course or the town of Groton.
The scam is reportedly being used nationwide, with names of the golf course changing to fit the local area.
Anyone has fallen victim to the scam should contact their credit card company and immediately report it to their local police department.
