EAST HAMPTON, CT (WFSB) -

Police have identified the officer who was hit by a car in East Hampton on Sunday night.

Hardie Marion Burgin was hit by a 2004 Toyota RAV4 while conducting traffic on Route 66 near Maple Street intersection around 8:15 p.m.

Burgin, 29, was helping an Eversource line crew with emergency work associated with electrical power outage when he was hit, police said.

Burgin was rushed to an area hospital with "serious injuries."

On Monday, Burgin remained at the hospital where he is conscious and alert and in good spirits.

"I prayed for him last night with all my heart and thank God he's going to be okay," said Annabette Latronica, who lives near the crash site.

Police said the car involved was driven by Michael Fraulino, of Portland. The driver was not injured and he remained at the scene.

The Connecticut State Police will oversee the investigation to ensure impartiality. The State Police Accident Reconstruction Unit was called in to assist.

Police did not say if the driver would face any charges.

East Hampton Town Manager Michael Maniscalco released a statement on the crash.
