MIDDLETOWN, CT (WFSB) -

Some call Labor Day the unofficial end to summer, but for students at Wesleyan University, it was also known as the first day of classes.

While many of the students were probably still thinking about the beach, they also had to hit the books.

“Today I had pre-modern Japan and Sociology,” said Shelli Weiler, who is a studio art major.

Students said as far as they can remember they have been in class on Labor Day at Wesleyan.

Weiler is a junior and said she just transferred and is now one of the 2,900 undergraduates enrolled at the school.

When asked what she would rather be doing, she said “probably hiking.”

“I feel like our break lasted pretty long, and I’m ready to get back, so I don't have a problem with it,” said Joanna Korpanty, a chemistry major.

The University of Connecticut, Quinnipiac University, and the University of Hartford are all in session, but they took Labor Day off.
