A Manchester man convicted for the killing of his next door neighbor was sentenced on Tuesday to 115 years in jail.

The crime happened in 2014.

Steven Durdek Jr. murdered a mother of four, and later bragged about it on social media, according to prosecutors.

On Jan. 18, 2014, firefighters in Manchester said they rushed to 52 Park St. The apartment building was on fire.

Police would later say was set by Durdek.

Through the following police investigation, court documents showed then 21-year-old Durdek, who lived next door, climbed onto the roof, waited for his victim’s son to leave, slid in through an unlocked window, and attacked the 56-year-old woman.

He sexually assaulted her, beat her with an ashtray, all while she desperately tried to fight, according to the documents.

She died of trauma to the head.

The documents said Durdek then wrapped her body in a blanket and set it on fire.

Durdek has a long criminal history, according to police. They quickly linked him to the crime after finding his DNA on a door nob of his victim’s apartment. Police said he later posted images of the victim to his Facebook page.

Following one court appearance, two of his friends told Eyewitness News they were shocked to hear about his involvement and stressed that Durdek was a good friend and looked after those close to him.

Earlier this year, he was convicted of a series of charges, including murder, burglary, sexual assault and arson.

Durdek was sentenced at Hartford Superior Court on Tuesday afternoon. He was sentenced on all seven charges, but they will have to be served consecutively, not concurrently making it span 115 years.
