SOUTHINGTON, CT (WFSB) -

A Southington family has seen an overwhelming response for a 5-year-old boy with Autism who will celebrate a birthday soon.

Karen Masella-Chartier wanted to make her son Joey’s birthday special, and people from all over the world have been helping make that happen for well over a week now.

“From the United Kingdom, Ireland, Trinidad and Venezuela. It's been amazing that it has gone out of the country,” said Masella-Chartier.

Joey will turn 6 on Friday. His mom thought she could make his day extra special by asking people to send him birthday cards, since he enjoys looking at cards and opening up the mail.

“It has been unbelievable. It really has been,” Masella-Chartier said.

Joey was diagnosed with Autism at the age of 2 and doesn’t speak. He communicates by pointing to pictures or using an iPad.

He has received well over 1,000 birthday cards, and because of that, the family caught Joey dancing for the very first time. He’s even saying more words.

“I've never seen him smile so much, laugh, he's been dancing. Sleeping better. I've never seen him happier than the 6 years than he has this past week. There's no words,” Masella-Chartier said. “Each card we read to Joey and each message is incredibly special and we just want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”

You can still send Joey a birthday card to Joey Masella, 433 Spring St., Southington, CT, 06489.
