BRISTOL, CT (WFSB) -

A woman is in critical condition after being hit by a car on Middle Street in Bristol on Wednesday afternoon.

The 57-year-old woman was hit by the car just after 5 p.m. in the area of 258 Middle St.

She suffered serious injuries to her head, chest and legs and was taken to Hartford Hospital via LIFE STAR.

Police said it appears the woman was crossing Middle Street when she was hit by a 2011 Ford Taurus, driven by a 56-year-old male. The driver was not injured.

While it is unclear if speeding was involved in this incident, people who live in the area said many drivers disobey the 30 mph speed limit.

"They drive too fast on this road, they always have and they always will," said John Dow, who is a friend of the victim's. He said his friend lives across the street and was likely headed to a nearby restaurant she often visits when she was hit.

"I've tried crossing this road and sometimes they don't even slow down," Dow said, adding that he believes something needs to be done before someone else gets hurt. "The crosswalk is down by the Mobile station and they don't even a have a button to change the light. They don't have one by the park where kids are crossing the road, to play basketball or volleyball, there's no crosswalk or nothing, it's ridiculous."

The crash remains under investigation, and any witnesses are asked to contact police at 860-584-3036.
