An elderly man was arrested after police investigated a number of gunshots complaints around the town of Branford.

Police said 81-year-old Howard Titus admitted to firing weapons on a number of occasions at various locations in the town.

They said they began investigating the complaints 18 months ago.

The complaints came from businesses and neighbors in the Supply Pond, North Chestnut and North Main Street areas.

Investigators learned that a dark-colored vehicle may have been involved.

On Monday just after 7 p.m., police said they received another complaint from patrons at a restaurant on North Main Street.

The gunshots were reportedly heard in the area of a property under construction at 250 North Main St.

When officers arrived, they found Titus in a dark red vehicle.

Titus told police that he had firearms in his trunk. He also said he'd been shooting at a dirt mound.

Police found two .22 caliber rifles and a .45 caliber handgun in his possession.

Titus was charged with unlawful discharge of a firearm, first-degree reckless endangerment, criminal trespass and breach of peace.

Police said Titus has no prior criminal record.

He was released on a $2,000 bond and scheduled to face a judge in New Haven on Sept. 20.
