Former Newington police officer facing child porn charges

BURLINGTON, CT (WFSB) -

A former Newington police officer has been accused of possessing child pornography.

On Monday, police arrested 48-year-old Mark Dichiara, of Burlington.

He was charged with promoting minor in obscene material and first-degree illegal possession of child pornography.

Police began their investigation in April of 2016, over the alleged sharing of child pornography over the internet.

CT State Police, and investigators with the Department of Homeland Security and FBI eventually searched Dichiara's home, where police said they found files containing the child pornography.

"It's scary and sad. I feel bad," said Heather Robillard, of Burlington. "Anytime you hear anything like that it's pretty horrific. I'm a champion of all children. That is disturbing and scary."

Dichiara was released on a $100,000 bond and is expected to appear in court on Sept. 26.

Dichiara retired in 2012.

He claims on his LinkedIn page that he currently works as a realtor and is also a former Newington volunteer firefighter.

"I'm glad they caught him I hope he gets some help. It's a sickness a mental sickness," said Beth Read, of Newington.
