Route 44 was closed in New Hartford because of a crash involving two pedestrians, one of whom has died.
The road has since reopened.
Officials said the incident occurred on Main Street around 9 a.m.
A car was driving on Main Street when it veered off the road and onto the sidewalk, where it hit the pedestrians.
State police said the Lifestar emergency helicopter responded to the scene and airlifted one of the people to Charlotte Hungerford Hospital in Torrington.
Officials said William Pellum, 69, of Pine Meadow, was killed in the incident.
The other pedestrian suffered serious injuries, according to police.
The driver was transported to Winsted Hospital for minor injuries.
The identities of the victims have not been released.
