A student responsible for writing a note threatening a shooting at Meriden's Maloney High School has been identified by police.

The note was discovered on Thursday in a boys locker room.

Police said they learned who wrote the note on Friday.

They said he was a 14-year-old boy who is currently being dealt with by the high school's administration.

The Meriden Board of Education will handle the necessary disciplinary action, according to police.

Police said they are working with the school's staff and appropriate criminal charges will be sought.

They said they promised extra patrols throughout the day on Friday as well as at the school's football game Friday night.

Parents of Maloney students received phone messages from the district to reassure parents that school will be a safe place on Friday.

Police said they did not believe the threat is credible, but some families questioned whether or not to send their children to school.

School officials said the school day has been running on a normal schedule.

According to the district, the note was found around noon on Thursday and indicated "a school shooting tomorrow." However, it's unclear how long the note had been in the boys gym locker.

Resource officers searched the locker room for evidence, but nothing was found.

Still, police said they aren't taking any chances.
