Family looking for answers after loved-one killed in Southington bike accident

SOUTHINGTON, CT (WFSB) -

A bicyclist in Southington died on Monday after being involved in a crash last Friday night.

Police said 44-year-old Steven Zavatkay was riding west down a hill on Savage Street around 2 a.m. Friday when he struck a utility pole near Hacienda Circle.

They said Zavatkay's bike left the road for some reason and entered a grassy shoulder before striking the pole.

Police said he suffered serious injuries as a result.

He was transported to St. Mary's Hospital in Waterbury for treatment.

Police said they gathered Zavatkay's personal belongings were gathered by officers at the scene.

They said the incident remains under investigation.

Zavatkay's family told Eyewitness News in an exclusive interview that he had been heading home from work at the Back Nine Tavern. They said something about the incident doesn't add up.

They spent the weekend combing Savage Street for clues.
