Rain makes for slippery morning commute

Posted: Updated:
HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -

Drivers were greeted Tuesday morning with what's been an unusual sight these past few months.

Rain made for some slick driving conditions on the roads.

While caution was advised for the commute, meteorologist Melissa Cole said the wet weather was definitely welcomed.

She said this year, places like Windsor Locks were down more than 9 inches of rain, which has placed much of the state in a severe drought.

"It's going to take a lot of rain before we catch up," Cole said. "Certainly [Tuesday's rain] isn't much when you put it in the whole scheme of things, but every little bit helps."

As of 6:15 a.m., most of the heavy rain had already departed the state. The rain was working its way east of Hartford and into Rhode Island.

"Take it slowly, give yourself a little extra time," Cole advised drivers.

Things were starting to dry out in western Connecticut at that time.

Temperatures were pretty mild. The day started in the low-to-mid 60s. Highs should be in the 70s for the rest of the day.

"The rain tapers off from west to east," Cole said. "We'll see some sunshine [Tuesday]. [Tuesday's] looking like one of the brighter days, believe it or not, over the next several."

The weather is expected to take an unsettled turn over the coming days.

"Some clouds roll back in here during the overnight hours," Cole said. "[Wednesday's] looking a bit unsettled."

Cole said there will be more clouds that sunshine on Wednesday with a chance for a pop-up shower.

"I think [Wednesday] is mainly dry," she said. "It's Thursday and Friday that we're going to see an area of low pressure sort of spinning off to our west and that's going to increase our chances for showers here."

The shower chances are for Thursday, Friday and possibly Saturday, Cole said.

"This system will be hard to budge," she said. "We'll be fine-tuning the forecast over the coming days."
