A family is in mourning after a woman was killed in a hit-and-run accident on Friday evening.
Police said the 40-year-old Meriden resident, Dania Cegeno-Delrosario, and her 7-year-old daughter Denisse, had gotten out of her car to cross Springdale Avenue at Lewis Avenue in Meriden, when a car struck the pair and took off.
The impact pushed Cegeno-Delrosario where she was discovered lying partially underneath a parked, white SUV.
"That my mom is under a jeep, a white jeep and someone crashed her," said Denisse.
Cegeno-Delrosario was taken via Lifestar to Hartford Hospital with serious head and chest injuries where she succumbed to her injuries.
Eyewitness News spoke exclusively with Cegeno-Delrosario’s daughter and family, who said without Cegeno-Delrosario’s actions at the last moment, Denisse would not be here.
"And it pushed both of us and it pushed her very hard," said Denisse, who described the impact of the car and her mother’s actions to get her out of way.
“So I wouldn't get hurt."
The family gathered together on Saturday afternoon to organize a plan to cover funeral costs for Cegeno-Delrosario, who they described as selfless and hard working.
Cegeno-Delrosario arrived in Connecticut two years ago from the Dominican Republican in search of a better life for her family. The family said she worked both a day job as a travel agent, and a night job caring for the elderly.
Police are investigating the case, following up on leads, and searching for the suspect who may be driving a dark-colored Nissan with a missing side mirror.
Police are urging those with information to contact Meriden Police at 203 630-6215.
