NEW HAVEN, CT (WFSB) -

Police in New Haven responded to Ferry Street on Tuesday afternoon for the report of a shooting.

The shooting happened Tuesday afternoon, just after 1:30 p.m., at the E&M Smokeshop and Convenience Store, New Haven Police Officer David Hartman said.

One person was shot and taken to the hospital where he died. The victim was identified as 21-year-old Muhanad Jawad, of New Haven. He is the owner of the shop and was working as a clerk at the time of the shooting.

The gunman was described as wearing a black shirt or hooded sweatshirt and dark-colored black pants.

Police said evidence strongly suggests robbery was not likely to be the motive for the shooting.

Just moments after the shooting, police were alerted to a car that may be involved. It was reportedly occupied by four people, and was later identified as a Honda CRV that was stolen recently in West Hartford.

There was a car chase, leading police to Quinnipiac Avenue, where it hit a home.

Three people were apprehended there.

A fourth was on the loose for a few hours, but was caught by around 4 p.m.

Police said the U.S. Coast Guard was called in to assist because the fourth person may have jumped into the Quinnipiac River.

At this point, police have not tied these two scenes together.

Those who live near the convenience store say it's not the best neighborhood.

"You could come downstairs for a second just to take some air and anything can happen. It's crazy out here,” said Diannek Carreno, of New Haven.

“I feel safe, but sometimes it's just horrible,” said Nancy Olivar, of New Haven.

Those who know the store owner said they hope police get to the bottom of this.

"Just from going in and grabbing an iced tea from him... A nice guy...oh that's horrible," said Gary Heriot, of New Haven.
