A Plainville man is facing child abuse charges stemming from an investigation that started earlier this month.
Police were notified by a woman who believed her live-in boyfriend, 20-year-old Jacob Matthews, was physically abusing her 2-year-old son.
Matthews is not the father of the child.
Police said early in the investigation, officers noticed bruising on the child’s face, head, hips and genitalia.
An examination by the Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect Program and the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center concluded that the bruising was consistent with child abuse.
Matthews was arrested on Tuesday and charged with risk of injury to a minor, cruelty to persons, third-degree assault, and disorderly conduct.
He was held on a $75,000 bond and is expected to appear in court on Wednesday.
The child is in the care of the Department of Children and Families.
