Police in New Haven said whoever shot and killed a store clerk Tuesday afternoon remains at large and targeted the victim.
Muhanad Jawad, 21, was murdered at the E&M Smokeshop and Convenience Store on Ferry Street around 1:30 p.m., according to police.
They initially said four people were apprehended on Quinnipiac Avenue in a stolen Honda CRV; however, they determined that the people in the vehicle were not connected to Jawad's death.
Detectives said they are examining and enhancing surveillance footage from a number of cameras.
None of that footage has been made public. Police said if investigators find that releasing the tapes would help them, they would do so.
Based on the evidence, investigators said they believe Jawad was targeted. They said robbery was not the motive.
At the time of the victim's death, he had several criminal cases against him, including firearm theft, assault on a police officer and charges that he had been dealing drugs.
Anyone who witnessed the crime or has information about what happened is asked to contact New Haven police at 203-946-6304.
Calls may be made anonymously.
