NEW BRITAIN, CT (WFSB) -

Police in New Britain said they remained on the scene of a shooting at an apartment complex.

Neighbors told Eyewitness News that they heard gunfire late Wednesday night. They also saw one of their neighbors run outside and fall to the ground.

It happened around 8 p.m. near the intersection of Farmington and Ward Avenues.

Police said a man was shot once and that it was not self-inflicted.

The victim and the suspect know each other, according to police.

The suspect is not in custody. Police hoped to provide a description later in the day on Thursday.

The victim, a man in his early 30s, was said to be in stable condition.

Neighbors called it a terrifying night.

They said they heard three or four gunshots that came from a third floor apartment.

After the man collapsed, they said it appeared police took one person into custody. However, police later said a suspect was not in custody.

A local business owner who owns a barbershop across the street told Eyewitness News that officers came to talk to neighbors Wednesday night.

"Police officer came to our house and knocked on the door and asked for our cameras, if we have cameras," said Ahmed Sufayan, a neighbor. "And I told him our neighbors do and are trying to look at them and see what's going on."

Those cameras, however, were not on, according to those neighbors.
