BRISTOL, CT (WFSB) -

The man accused of shooting a Bristol father to death is being held on bond after appearing in court Monday morning.

Police said 35-year-old Chad Couture shot and killed 63-year-old Daniel Caron.

Police said Caron was shot in the chest outside of a home on Woodland Street on Friday evening. Caron was transported to Bristol Hospital where police said he was pronounced dead.

According to court documents Couture admitted to shooting Caron, calling it an "accident." Court documents also said Couture admitted to drinking a half pint of vodka before the shooting.

Documents didn't say how or why the pistol was brought out, but after a shot went off, Couture reportedly frantically told a passerby "I shot him by accident."

"It's a total shock, they hung out everyday. We all hung out. It was like a big family. I just don't understand what happened," said Brian Bellefoeur, who is friend's with Couture.

The daughter of Caron spoke to Eyewitness News this weekend.

"He was just a charismatic, lively person," Nicole Caron said Saturday about her late father. "This isn't how he deserved to go."

Nicole Caron told Eyewitness News that the Caron family was visiting the family residence of Couture on Friday evening at the time of the shooting.

"They were good friends. I cannot imagine this was anything, but an accident," Nicole Caron previously told Eyewitness News.

Nicole Caron told Eyewitness News that Daniel Caron left behind four children and two grandchildren.

In court, Eyewitness News learned that Couture is struggling with a substance abuse problem and has had issues in the past with guns.

While court documents show he had six weapons registered to his name, the gun in the incident wasn't.

In fact, he had a revoked pistol permit after a previous threatening complaint.

Couture was charged with first-degree manslaughter with a firearm and criminal possession of a firearm.

Couture is being held on a $750,000 bond.
