NEWINGTON, CT (WFSB) -

Hurricane Matthew mostly missed Connecticut, but the storm caused significant damage in the Carolinas and displaced hundreds of animals.

The Connecticut Humane Society just got 23 dogs in their Newington shelter, who were displaced by the storm in North and South Carolina.

Now to be clear these animals were already living in southern shelters. But after the storm, those shelters became overpopulated so the Connecticut Humane Society stepped in to help.

The pets will "receive medical treatment here, be spayed or neutered and be put up for adoption," Connecticut Humane Society officials said. Some dogs had skin and dental conditions, kennel cough, and even heartworm.

They have also paid to treat five heartworm positive dogs. It could "take months and several rounds of medicine to clear the parasite from an animal’s system," Connecticut Humane Society officials said.
