New Haven is known for its pizza, but soon the Elm City could become a destination for donuts.
The Elm City touts itself as a foodie destination. A new donut shop opened this week near the Yale University campus.
Donut Crazy opened its doors on York Street on Wednesday morning and the foot traffic was nonstop, including Yale junior Diksha Brahmbhatt, who is a member of the Yale Davenport Donut Club.
"Basically a bunch of students who get together Saturday morning at 9 a.m. to literally eat donuts,” Brahmbhatt said.
Store owner Jason Wojnarowski said his shop, Donut Crazy, is not just a name and it allows customers to choose from the 40 different types of donuts.
"It started out we were going to do specialties and rotate them every couple of weeks and a lot of them have stuck where we need to keep them full time....the cannoli, maple bacon, cookie dough, apple pie,” Wojnarowski said.
Wojnarowski started the shop five years ago in Stratford. New Haven was the fourth location, with another one on the way.
When people think of donuts, they typically think of breakfast foods, but these are not the typical donuts. The store features double decker birthday cake.
Donut Crazy will be open from 7 a.m. to late night. With the college and Toads Place right next store, on the weekends, they'll be open to 2:30 a.m.
"I think that everybody on campus is really excited about it,” Yale freshman Olivia Thomas said. "For the past month I've been walking by, I've been peeking in. Each time I'd see progress, that was really cool, so we were really excited to try it out."
"The best part about it is its dessert, but also a little more acceptable than having ice cream for lunch,” Brahmbhatt said.
Thursday was just a soft opening. They'll actually have a grand opening with a ribbon cutting Thursday afternoon.
