NEW HAVEN, CT (AP) -

The former treasurer of a Connecticut canine search and rescue group who admitted stealing about $150,000 from the nonprofit organization to fuel his gambling addiction is seeking to avoid prison.

Thomas Recck of New Britain is scheduled to be sentenced Monday in federal court in New Haven. He pleaded guilty last year to fraud and tax charges.

Recck is asking a judge to sentence him to five years of probation, 300 hours of community service and mental health treatment. He also has been paying restitution. Prosecutors want him to serve about two years in prison.

Authorities say Recck embezzled from the Glastonbury-based Connecticut Canine Search and Rescue from 2008 to 2012.

Recck's lawyer says in court documents that Recck has been receiving treatment and working to rehabilitate himself.
