EAST WINDSOR, CT (WFSB) -

One person was killed in a fire that broke out at a mobile home in East Windsor on Sunday night.

According to police, around 10:25 p.m., an officer was traveling west on North Road (Rt. 140) near its intersection with Route 5.

The officer observed smoke coming from a trailer park located behind Sofia's Restaurant at 9 North Rd. It was found the smoke was coming from one of the trailer homes. The Warehouse Point Fire Department and Broad Brook Fire Department were called to the scene.

The officer attempted to gain entry to the home by kicking the front door open. Not knowing if anyone was inside, the officer attempted to enter, but was pushed back by heavy black smoke, police said.

"Upon our arrival, heavy fire was coming out of the windows and the doors," said James Barton, Warehouse Point Fire Department. "We had a report of a person trapped."

Officers made numerous attempts to get in from various sides of the home and were unsuccessful because the trailer was quickly engulfed in flames.

Residents living in nearby trailers were successfully evacuated and were not harmed.

The two fire departments quickly extinguished the fire. Once the fire was put out, a search of the home was conducted and it was found the resident inside had died in the fire.

Police said the identity of the individual is being withheld pending notification of the next of kin.

Two of the neighboring homes were damaged and those residents were temporarily displaced while the investigation continues.

Other residents were let back into their homes.

The incident is under investigation by the Warehouse Point Fire Department, the Connecticut fire marshal, the state's attorney office, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner and the East Windsor Police Department.

The fire's cause is not yet known.

Route 140 was closed overnight, but is now open to traffic.
