HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -

Hartford police returned to the scene of a shooting that landed a 10-year-old girl in the hospital and put an emergency room on lockdown.

The girl, whom was struck in the face on Branford Street on Sunday, is expected to be OK.

Police said they returned to the scene Monday morning to sweep up broken glass and continue the investigation on the porch of the Branford Street home. The home was hit by bullets.

"My heart goes out to any young people, who now have to be careful of where they go and if they go, because they don't know if they'll be next," neighbor Wanda Hedman said.

Hedman said she was home alone when she heard shots fired on Sunday afternoon. She laid low as she heard bullet after bullet. When it stopped, Hedman went outside and knew something was horribly wrong.

"We checked on each other," Hedman said. "It was really hard to hear the mom."

Juanita Gardner, who lives across the street, said she watched helplessly as the 10-year-old girl was shot in her house through the front door.

"The father was bringing her out," Gardner said. "I said, 'what's the matter and they said she got shot.'"

The 10-year-old was rushed to St. Francis Hospital where police said the emergency room was locked down around 4 p.m. on Sunday. Authorities said they take that step whenever a situation has the potential to become a security threat. The lockdown was lifted shortly after 5 p.m.

"Every day, I've gone to work was to protect the children, every day," Hedman, who is a retired West Hartford fifth grade teacher, said. "To know a child has been injured or has the possibility to be injured hurts your heart."

The girl was transferred to Connecticut Children's Medical Center in Hartford. She remains in stable condition there.

On Monday, detectives went door-to-door, canvassing the street for clues to bring peace to a neighborhood and family that's searching for justice.

"It's sad when it comes to people shooting up people's homes, it's very sad," neighbor Larry Lawrence said.

The victim's family did not want to comment to the media on Monday.

Police said they are still seeking tips from the public as information on a suspect has not been released. Anyone with information about what happened is asked to call the Hartford Police Department's tip line at 860-757-4179.
