A number of businesses sought to honor veterans by offering a variety of items free of charge on Friday, Veterans Day.

Chimirri's on the Silas Deane Highway in Wethersfield said it would offer free coffee and slices of its new Italian Mascarpone Cake and Hartford Cream Pie to vets and active military service members. It's happening from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

"A lot of them sit down, they have coffee, they talk to each other, which is pretty cool," Guy Chimirri, owner. "It's about honoring them."

In New Britain, the Stanley Golf Course will be honoring vets with a "free greens fee." Mayor Eric Stewart and other city officials said all military personnel and veterans will receive a free greens fee when they show their veteran ID, or similar proof, at the golf course.

"Our veterans have contributed and done so much for all of us and this is just our small way of saying thank you for their sacrifice," Stewart said.

Jim Brennan, an Army veteran, enjoyed a game with fellow vets.

"Veterans should be remembered on a day like this because of the sacrifice veterans have made from the time this country was founded," he told Eyewitness news.
