Police are searching for a suspect after a 5-year-old girl was found alone at the Port Authority Bus Terminal in New York City and her mother was found dead in Connecticut.
Stamford police said the girl told authorities her father asked her to wait inside the terminal, but he never returned on Monday.
She was able to tell officers she lived in Stamford where police found her mother's body inside their Courtland Avenue apartment.
Police said the girl's father, 32-year-old Elmer Gomez Ruono, is a person of interest in her mother's death.
Gomez Ruono is described as about 5'8" tall, 140 pounds with long black hair and a medium complexion.
Officials said Gomez Ruono was seen entering the terminal in New York around 10 a.m. Monday with his daughter after getting of a bus, most likely from Stamford. He then left the 5-year-old girl on the second floor concourse. Commuters alerted the Port Authority Police shortly after noticing the girl left alone for an extended period of time.
The young girl was unharmed and in good physical condition, police said.
Police said the victim is Gomez Ruono's wife, however, they have not released her name at this time. The family had just moved into the Stamford apartment from New Jersey a few days ago and had a party Sunday with family and friends to celebrate their new home, police said.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Stamford Police Department.
