Foodshare's Turkey Trot accepts thousands of donations

SIMSBURY, CT (WFSB) -

The need is great throughout the year, but is particularly painful around the holidays.

That's why Foodshare is hosting its Jack Bannan Memorial Turkey Trot on Wednesday at Stop & Shop in Simsbury, among other locations.

The Bloomfield-based organization said it was looking for 15,871 turkeys.

As of Wednesday afternoon, it said it took in 4,512 turkeys across multiple venues.

At the event in Simsbury that featured WFSB's Scot Haney, more than 1,400 were donated.

Cash donations were also accepted. More than $281,860 was donated so far.

The drive also happening at Henry James Memorial School, Fitzgerald's Supermarket in Simsbury, Kane's Market in Simsbury, Geissler's Supermarkets in Bloomfield and Granby, Stop & Shop Supermarkets in Granby and Simsbury, Miller Foods in Avon, Big Y in Avon and Stop Rite of Canton.

The drive runs until 8 p.m.
