MERIDEN, CT (WFSB) -

Police said the 73-year-old man found dead in his Meriden apartment earlier this month was on the Connecticut Sex Offender Registry list.

Officers were called to the Tower Properties Apartments on East Main Street on Nov. 2 where they found the body of Thomas Wilderman.

They're working to confirm it with help from the state medical examiner's office. They said they'll release the name once next of kin is notified.

Neighbors told officers they grew concerned after they had not seen Wilderman in his third floor unit for a few weeks. They said they called police Wednesday night after a neighbor and maintenance worker went up to check on Wilderman.

When they arrived at the door, the two people told police they could smell something bad inside. Investigators were called to the scene minutes later and they discovered the body of Wilderman inside.

The death of Wilderman was ruled a homicide.

Wilderman was charged with five counts of second-degree sexual assault of a minor and five counts of risk of injury to or impairing morals of children. He was convicted of those crimes on Oct. 14, 1998 and was released from prison on 7/20/2011.

Police said the investigation into the death of Wilderman was "active."  Anyone with information about the missing vehicle is asked to contact the Meriden Police Department at 203-630-6201.
