VERNON, CT (WFSB) -

Tis the season for stealing, and it has already been happening in Vernon where home surveillance cameras caught someone swiping a package off a woman’s doorstep.

It happened over the weekend on Village Street in Vernon.

The homeowner’s son said his mother bought herself an expensive coat for her birthday, and that’s what was inside the package. He also said another package was stolen from the same spot three months ago.

Neighbors said they are surprised this is happening where they live.

“I heard about it on television but never thought it would happen here," said Darrell Owens. “The person should be prosecuted.

Police said the suspect was dressed in dark clothing and had his head covered.

“I've never seen him. Not even walking by. To me, I don't think he lives here but might know people who might live around here," Robin McShane said.

According to Consumer Reports, to prevent this from happening to you, have the box delivered to work or a neighbor’s house, where the person is home.

If that’s not an option, have the delivery person put the package out of sight, placing it at a back or side door.

If you have a package stolen, you should report it to your police department.

Anyone with information on the Vernon incident should contact police.
