WEST HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -

Hatchimals are the hottest toy for Christmas and they are flying off store shelves across the country, including in Connecticut.

Hatchimals are sold out all across the state, but Eyewitness News has learned that more are on their way to Connecticut.

Hoverboard, Nintendo Wii and Frozen Elsa dolls were the hot Christmas toys of the past. But this year, it's all about Hatchimals.

"We all know Hatchimals is the hottest toy going,” Toys R Us Store Manager Pete Litin said.

High up on kids wish lists this season are Hatchimals, which are the creatures that lives inside an egg. The more a child plays with it, the quicker it hatches. Then you can raise the furry animal through three stages, starting out as a baby.

"It's a step down from a pet, but a step down from a toy I guess,” Steph Daniel, of West Hartford, said. “You can raise it, but you don't have to be too responsible for it."

Price tag for Hatchimals is just under $50 and it's only sold at Toys R Us, Target, Kmart and Walmart.

Parents told Eyewitness News they were going to great lengths to get their hands on one in time for the holidays. Some parents have lined up outside the West Hartford Toys R Us when new shipments come in.

"Usually it's pretty crazy. It's bedlam,” Litin said. “It's even worse than the beginning of Black Friday some days."

Spinmaster, who is the company that created the toy, said it didn't anticipate its popularity.

"The consumer response to Hatchimals has been extraordinary...Some of our first shipments have already sold out.  While additional product will hit retail shelves in November, we anticipate this inventory will also sell out quickly,” Spinmaster said in a statement to Eyewitness News.

If you can't get your hands on Hatchimals, Toys R Us has some other options.

"Obviously Snuggle the puppy, very interactive, comes in a brown, comes in a white. PJ masks headquarters which I mentioned before,” Litin said. “We have things like Shopkins, the new series's and all the Shopkins are very popular."

The best bet to find the Hatchimals is to call your local stores to see when new shipments will be coming in.

If you need one right away and money is no object, check out Amazon or eBay. Prices start at about $220.
