A Connecticut College student was charged in connection with a serious crash involving a scooter in New London.
Police arrested 19-year-old Sophia Thielman of Rye Brook, NY early Tuesday morning for allegedly driving while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.
Investigators believe she was driving when she collided with a scooter just after midnight on Route 32 south near Benham Avenue, which is near the Waterford town line.
According to officers, the man on the scooter was taken to Lawrence & Memorial Hospital with serious injuries. He was then transferred to Yale-New Haven Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.
Connecticut College said it did not have any information about the scooter driver; however, it released a statement on Tuesday.
"We can confirm that there was an accident on Route 32 near our campus," said Deborah P. MacDonnell, director of public relations for Connecticut College. "Our thoughts are with the motor scooter driver at this time. We are hopeful for a full recovery."
Detectives and an accident reconstruction team spent hours on scene to determine what caused the crash.
Investigators re-opened the road just before 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
Anyone with information is asked to call New London police at 860-447-1481.
Thielman was released on a promise to appear and is to comply with an alcohol and drug evaluation. She is not allowed to drive and is expected to appear in court in January.
