NEW HAVEN, CT (WFSB) -

Police in New Haven are investigating after vandalism was recently found at the Wilbur Cross High School Athletic Complex.

Spray-painted swastikas and references to President-elect Donald Trump were found on walls and equipment inside the complex. The vandalism was not visible from the street.

"Once discovered, District officials took all the necessary steps to ensure the graffiti was removed in all locations and to maintain the safe and calm school climate," New Haven Public Schools said in a statement on Tuesday.

Police said they did not find any evidence that those responsible forced their way inside the complex, so it is possible a door was left unlocked.

“The investigation of hate crimes and hate-motivated behavior as well as the apprehension of hate crime offenders is of paramount importance to the New Haven Police Department,” police said in a press release.

Officials with New Haven Public Schools said they were supporting the police investigation and have informed parents about the vandalism. Anyone with information leading police to the suspects should call police at 203-946-6304.

“In this case, there wasn’t a sole person or group that was targeted. The NHPD, therefore considers our community the victim in this crime. Our citizens should be confident that these offences will be investigated and that they are properly supported throughout this process. Our city is defined by its sense of community. When you promote hate, you do so against us all. We will do all that we can to find you out,” police continued to say in the press release.
