Police in Wallingford have made an arrest after gravestones were vandalized at the Center Street Cemetery earlier this month.

On Nov. 6, the caretaker of the cemetery reported that two gravestones, a memorial post, and a larger gravestone were damaged.

The total cost to repair the items was estimated at about $1,100.

Following an investigation, police identified the suspect as 29-year-old Joel Herrle, of Wallingford.

Police said Herrle told them he was intoxicated and got into an altercation outside of the cemetery after leaving a bar.

He reportedly ran into the cemetery and had stepped on a gravestone. Police said Herrle explained that he leaned on a second gravestone that gave way.

According to police, Herrle told them he couldn’t recall everything that happened that night because of his level of intoxication.

Police arrested Herrle and charged him with third-degree criminal mischief and simple trespass. He was released on a $1,000 bond and is expected to appear in court on Dec. 12.
