WETHERSFIELD, CT (WFSB) -

A man, the search for whom led to the death of a Wethersfield police K9, was arrested for holding a woman against her will.

Police said 20-year-old Chauncey Smith of Hartford is accused of beating a woman and holding her inside a motel on the Silas Deane Highway on Nov. 21.

During the search for Smith, police said one of their K9s, Thor, suffered an injury that later proved to be fatal.

Police said the search started after Smith caught wind of their presence and fled on foot from the Motel 6.

Officers had learned that there was a protective order against him in protection of the victim.

Search teams, including Thor's K9 unit, were deployed.

During the search, Thor became separated from his handler and was found about two hours later with an injury.

Thor was brought to the vet where he later collapsed and died as a result of the wound. Police said an ultrasound determined that the injury was related to the search. No other details were released.

Monday, Smith was arrested by Hartford police in a dumpster.

He was charged by Wethersfield police with interfering with police and violation of a protective order. His bond was set at $100,000.

He faced a judge in New Britain on Tuesday.

Smith was not charged with the death of Thor.

Wethersfield police said there will be a memorial for Thor to commemorate his two years of service on Dec. 8 from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Wethersfield Community Center on Greenfield Street.
