OLD LYME, CT (WFSB) -

Interstate 95 south was closed in Old Lyme for several hours on Thursday after a woman was struck and killed by a tractor trailer.

State police said it happened just after exit 71, the Four Mile River Road exit.

Police said the woman killed was identified as 31-year-old Ashley Ferguson, of Middletown. A child, nearly 2 years old, was in the back seat of the car at the time. The child was taken to the hospital as a precaution.

Police said Ferguson had gotten out of her car to check on the child in the back seat. That's when she was hit by the tractor trailer.

The highway was closed for several hours on Thursday. As of 10 p.m., the highway had fully reopened.

A fuel spill required crews from the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection to respond.
