It’s the gift-giving season, but you can’t wrap up the gift of life and put it under the tree.
This week the Liberty Bank Surprise Squad was able to honor a Connecticut woman who gave just that to a friend.
Two years ago, doctors told Brian Costello, who has polycystic kidney disease, that it was time for a new kidney. So the search for a donor began.
It turned out, his wife Lisa’s co-worker, who is also the couple’s longtime friend, was a match.
“I wanted him to have a normal life without having to be on dialysis,” said Krista Bounanni.
It was a selfless thought that turned into a new reality for Brian and his family.
“She gave him the gift of life and we can never repay her,” said Lisa Costello.
The surgery happened on Nov. 16, and two weeks later, the Liberty Bank Surprise Squad showed up to drop off a few things for Bounanni, who was recovering at home.
She couldn’t believe the squad showed up, and was touched to hear that her and Lisa’s co-worker actually nominated her.
The squad presented Bounanni with two gift cards that could help she and her family during the holiday season.
In addition to a Stop & Shop and Toys R Us gift card, the squad is also mailing her a $200 spa gift card so she can treat herself.
