Hartford parents call for action after child walked out of school alone

Posted: Updated:

On Thursday, parents in Hartford demanded action after a 4-year-old girl walked right out of her elementary school without anyone noticing.

Fortunately, the child was not harmed, but a group of parents held a rally outside the Milner School, protesting what they believe was a slow response from the district.

Four-year-old Aniyahlee's mother Keishla Rodriguez said when she looks at her daughter, she can’t help but think about how she almost lost her.

“I'm still having trouble going to sleep, a lot of things are rewinding,” Rodriguez said.

On Tuesday, Aniyahlee somehow walked out of her school without anyone noticing. Fortunately, a Good Samaritan rescued her and took her home.

“If that lady didn't come in my daughter’s way, who would have known what would have happened to her. She could have been abducted, missing,” Rodriguez said.

Police said Aniyahlee was sent to the office for an early dismissal, but when she didn’t see her mom there, she simply walked out the door.

District parents said they believe someone must pay for this unimaginable mistake.

“Everybody should be in trouble, just like when a child's in a home and mom do something, they shut the whole house down, shut the whole administration down,” said parent Tynima Toney.

PTO President Stacey Figueroa met with district officials, but said the meeting was disappointing.

“Our kids need to be more safe now than ever because of this situation, it's just not right,” Figueroa said.

Rodriguez said until more safety upgrades happen, her daughter won’t return to the school.

Hartford police released a statement saying “We take this matter very seriously. We are grateful that the child is safe. District administrators have communicated and met with parents, and have apologized to the family and the child for this unfortunate situation. We are working with the school community as we review our procedures. We remain fully committed to the safety and security of each and everyone of our students.”

The PTO is asking for a new principal and safety upgrades.

The district did issue a statement saying they have apologized to the family and are trying to figure out what went wrong.

They did not explain what the proper procedures are supposed to be for early dismissals.
