WEST HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -

Police in West Hartford said they're looking into the robbery of a victim who was looking to sell an item on Craigslist.

Officers said they were called on Dec. 2 around 9:30 p.m. to New Britain Avenue.

The victim told officers that he agreed to meet someone at the spot for a cell phone sale.

He had placed a "for sale" ad through Craigslist, he told police.

After the meeting, a suspect pulled out a handgun and threatened to shoot the seller several times and demanded the phone.

"He made sure the phone was working and then he pulled out a gun and pointed it at the guy, threatened to shoot him ... and said turn over the phone," said West Hartford Police Lt. Eric Rocheleau.

The suspect's vehicle, possibly an Acura, struck the victim's vehicle as he left the area. The car was last seen heading east on New Britain Avenue.

"He did follow the suspect for a little while, which we don't recommend," Rocheleau said.

The victim was not hurt.

The suspect was only described as a man with a thin build in his 20s. He carried a small black handgun.

Anyone with information is asked to call West Hartford police at 860-570-8874.

Police sought to remind people to use well-lit and video-recorded public areas to make transactions.
