Middletown man charged with DUI after CCSU student hit by car in Newington

NEWINGTON, CT (WFSB) -

A Middletown man was arrested for driving under influence after police said a student at Central Connecticut State University was hit by a car over the weekend. 

Police said 21-year-old Matthew McGovern, of Unionville, was hit by a motor vehicle near the Central Connecticut State University campus on Saturday night.

Officers were called to a report of a man "on the ground and unconscious" near the intersection of Fenn Road and Myra Cohen Way around 7:15 p.m. Police said McGovern, who police said is a student at Central Connecticut State University, was rushed to a nearby hospital and was initially in critical condition. 

At last check, police said McGovern was in stable condition.  

The driver, who was later identified as 29-year-old Sergiy Svystun, involved in the crash was arrested and charged with driving under the influence, police said.

The crash remains under investigation by the Mid State Accident Reconstruction Squad. Police said that additional charges were pending.
