GROTON, CT (WFSB) -

Groton police said a man was shot and killed outside of a bar Sunday morning.

According to police, shots were fire outside of Ryan's Pub on Fort Hill Road around 1:30 a.m.

Officers found 23-year-old Joseph Gingerella, of Groton, in the parking lot suffering from multiple gun shot wounds.

He was taken to Lawrence and Memorial Hospital in New London where he was pronounced dead.

His family released a statement on Sunday that said "A light has left our lives. Joey Gingerella brought a surplus of light and love into the world. His infectious joy would fill whatever room he was in. We will miss him terribly. Joey was dedicated to helping people. He used his life experiences to aid anyone in the community who needed a helping hand. We are incredibly moved by the outpouring of support from the community. Thank you all for your kind words about Joey."

Family and friends are remembering Gingerella, who was well known in the community and had turned his life around after battling drug addiction.

Poquonnock Fire Chief Joseph Winski said Gingerella and his parents formed an organization called Community Speaks Out,and helped get more than 100 people into rehabilitation programs.

He said Gingerella's need to help others led to his death. He was shot after coming to the aid of an assault victim.

"This morning he, once again, tried to help and intervene during an assault and he became the victim," Winski said. "His parents should be extremely proud, he motivated them through his own personal struggles to come up with ideas to try to help others."

Police have identified the suspect in the shooting as 30-year-old Dante Hughes, of Groton, who is considered to be armed and dangerous.

He is facing a murder charge.
