ROCKY HILL, CT (WFSB) -

We've all seen those stories about a woman who said she had no idea she was pregnant, and then gives birth.

We ask, how is that possible?

That’s a question a Connecticut mother said she asked herself too, until it happened to her.

Motherhood came fast for 26-year-old Amanda Francis, who said she only had about one day to adjust to the news that she was going to be a mother, before actually becoming one.

“At 9 in the morning on Tuesday the 19th, I found out I was two months pregnant, so at 9 a.m. the following morning, so 24 hours later, I was in the emergency room, getting an ultrasound, finding out I was in labor,” Francis said.

It happened this past July.

She said she was living in Boston, enjoying a care-free summer, or so she thought.

“I was active in the local music scene in Boston, so I would go to shows almost every weekend. Luckily I had an aversion to alcohol the whole time I was pregnant so I wasn't drinking a lot,” Francis said.

One month before she had baby boy Kellen, she had gone to Virginia and was rock climbing at seven months pregnant.

“The only symptom I had was a missed period and my period has always been irregular, so I took six home pregnancy tests and they all came back negative,” she said.

The Rocky Hill resident said she didn’t have health insurance at the time, so she waited to go see a doctor.

When she finally did, that’s when she was told she was two months pregnant.

"That night I started having some mild cramping and spotting. By the following morning at work, it was so unbearable, that I went to the hospital, to the emergency room and they informed me that I was a little bit more than two months pregnant. I was actually eight months pregnant and in labor,” Francis said.

Nine hours later she delivered a healthy baby boy, Kellen.

"I am so lucky he came out healthy, even if he was a month early, he was in the NICU for 20 days, but he's perfectly healthy and happy,” she said.

How does something like this happen? Francis said she was told her hormone levels may have been off, which could have caused negative pregnancy tests, and she also says actually lost weight during that time.

As expected, Francis was not prepared to bring a baby home, so her family and friends pitched in and made sure the two had everything they needed to start their new, unexpected, life together.
