NORWICH, Conn. (WFSB) -

A Norwich police saved more than the day for one local family, he saved Christmas.

A real Grinch was working overtime this week in Norwich, stealing Christmas gifts form under the tree of one hardworking family.

But thanks to the efforts of a local police officer, the spirit of the holiday lives on.

This has been a tough year for the Arroyo family. After struggling to find work, Bianca Arroyo landed a good job and started buying Christmas gifts for her 3 year-old daughter before she wrapped them and put them under the tree.

While Bianca stepped out, a Grinch snuck in and stole all of 3 year-old Laneyah's gifts...and then some.

When she called Norwich police, an old friend and high school classmate, officer Mario Castro, answered the call.

Officer Castro knew exactly what to do.

He came downtown to the Tommy Toy Fund store and loaded up.

He returned to the Arroyo home with gifts and a new bike.

While the burglary remains under investigation, the family is forever grateful to the Santa in blue.
