Thousands of dollars worth of damage to a New Britain store was done so thieves could get their hands on a $30 toy.
Steve Amato told Eyewitness News said he learned of the damage to Amato's Toy and Hobby over the weekend.
"Police said your windows have been broken," Amato said. "We have three people in custody and we need someone to come down here."
He said since it happened after he left work on Saturday, he's replaced damaged glass and he started to redress the windows on Tuesday.
"When we got here, it wasn't as bad as it could have been," Amato said.
Amato said it was devastating that it happened so close to the holidays. However, he's grateful for the support his small business has received.
"Thankfully, no one got hurt in the process," Amato said.
Amato also said his store has been the victim of this kind of crime before, the most recent of which happened last year.
"What happens now, and the same with all of our front ones, if you try to break it, it spiderwebs like a front windshield," Amato said.
This time around, he said the damage was done so the thieves could take a $30 stuffed penguin. Police said three teens were arrested trying to hop a bus. That stuffed animal was later returned.
"I thought maybe I'd hear from the parents, but I haven't hear from them either," Amato said.
The estimate for the damage is around $2,000. But, Amato said he wants to move forward.
"There's plenty of bad stuff out there, so let's celebrate the season and get on with it," Amato said.
