NEW LONDON, CT (WFSB) -

Thieves made off with thousands of dollars worth of drugs from a New London pharmacy on Tuesday morning.

Nagy Wassef, owner of the Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy, said the thieves used a sledge hammer to get in through the front door of the pharmacy.

"We found prescription bottles all over the floor, so obviously somebody was there,” Wassef said. “It seems that they got some controls, but upon further, look around, they got some diabetes medication, some blood pressure medication, I’m not sure if they knew exactly what they were getting."

The southeast portion of the state has had string of drug overdose deaths recently, but New London police said they aren't linking the ongoing drug problem to this break-in at this time.

Police are in the process of reviewing surveillance video, and anyone with information should contact police at 860-447-1481.
