A manhunt for a home invasion and stabbing suspect in the Greenville section of Norwich has ended with the suspect dead, police said.
The incident began on Boswell Avenue just before 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Police had been searching for 25-year-old Brandon Uzialko, who was wanted for a home invasion that led to a stabbing on Saturday night.
According to police, Uzialko exchanged gunfire with Norwich Police officers when they were looking for him, then fled on foot.
"It was chaos," eyewitness Michelle Hrubienski said.
Officers scoured the Boswell Avenue area with long guns all Tuesday night. People were asked to avoid the area and told not to return home if they lived there. For those who were inside their homes, police urged them to stay away from windows and to lock their doors.
"It was crazy trying to keep the kids out of the windows," eyewitness Nichole Hyland said. "They saw all the lights."
Uzialko was later found by members of the State Police Tactical Team in the area of 13 Prospect St. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
“Honestly, I was getting ready to leave and go to the store and I heard a few gunshots and it stopped and all of a sudden I heard a lot of sirens coming up this way so I figured something was going on,” Norwich resident Matt Ramsey, who believes he was outside his home when Uzialko fired at police said he feels like he's lucky to be alive, said.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will be conducting a post-mortem examination in order to determine cause and manner of death. The name of an officer involved is being withheld at this time.
This incident remains under investigation by the Connecticut State Police Eastern District Major Crime Unit. The name of the officer involved is also not being released at this time.
On Saturday night, officers were called to a report of a stabbing and home invasion at a residence on Quarto Road in Norwich.
They learned the suspect, Uzialko, knew the victim. Police said the victim was a new boyfriend of Uzialko's ex-girlfriend.
Police said Uzialko entered the home and stabbed a male victim multiple times, which led to life-threatening injuries. Uzialko fled the residence on foot. Police said he was believed to be armed with knives and a handgun.
Boswelll Avenue, between 7th Street and where Starwood Market is, was closed until 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday.
