A New London man was arrested after police said a homeowner and some neighbors stopped him during a burglary attempt in the Whaling city on Monday afternoon.
Officers were called to a burglary in process at a home on Center Street around 3:15 p.m. Upon arrival, patrol officers spotted the homeowner and neighbors attempting to detain the burglary suspect, who was later identified as 37-year-old Henry Mercado.
The homeowner told police that Monday's burglary was the second in "many days" at the home on Center Street.
During the investigation, the homeowner told police that he spotted Mercado on his property and confronted him. The homeowner told police that Mercado "threatened the owner with a cutting-type instrument and a struggle ensued."
Mercado and homeowner "received lacerations'" during the struggle, according to police. The homeowner was treated and has since been released from a local hospital, police added.
Mercado was arrested and charged with first-degree burglary, possession of burglary tools, second-degree assault, carrying a dangerous weapon, and second-degree threatening. He is being held on a $50,000 bond.
